Gravel Riding
Gravel riding, or mixed-surface riding, is one of the fastest-growing forms of cycling. PEC sees this as an opportunity to invest in Pennsylvania’s trails and public lands and increase opportunities for communities and individuals to engage with the outdoors.
We’re working to facilitate the conversation around the role that gravel riding plays in the outdoor recreation economy and land stewardship, and conduct research on gravel riding trends in Pennsylvania and beyond. Each year since 2019, PEC has hosted the Public Lands Ride, a non-competitive gravel ride at Black Moshannon State Park.
Gravel Recommendations
To support the responsible growth of gravel riding, PEC hosted a Gravel Summit in State College on April 28, 2022, and intends to host a larger summit in 2023. The recommendations that appear in this report are based on the summit discussion as well as PEC’s own insights concerning the future of mixed-surface cycling. Together, the recommendations are intended to contribute to a statewide climate in which land managers, route planners, and the riding public are in communication, working together to steward the land, and contributing to the outdoor economy.
