NORTHEAST PENNSYLVANIA ENVIRONMENTAL PARTNERS ANNOUNCE AWARDS DINNER & AWARD RECIPIENTS
Luzerne – The Northeast Environmental Partners, which is comprised of Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Pennsylvania Environmental Council, PPL Corporation, Procter & Gamble Paper Products Company, and Wilkes University are pleased to announce the 29th Annual Evening for Northeast Pennsylvania’s Environment will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at the Woodlands Inn and Resort.
RECIPIENTS OF THE 29th ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL PARTNERSHIP AWARDS:
- Free Book Swap, Wayne County, for exemplifying how partnerships working together get big jobs completed for the benefit of the environment and our community. This event brings together local governments, area businesses, non-profits, and individuals to provide a sustainably responsible outlet for mass quantities of books.
- Lehman Sanctuary & Misericordia University’s “The Language of Water” Project, Luzerne County, this partnership created a program that educates community members and students of all ages about the critical importance of wetlands, their conservation, and how environmental scientists measure the health of wetlands ecosystems.
- Monroe County Municipal Waste Management Authority, Monroe County, for managing and conducting extensive recycling and litter programs within the County through innovative partnerships with municipalities, Pennsylvania Game Commission, Pocono Mountains Visitor Bureau, non-profit homeless service provider Street2Feet, and many others.
- Pike County Tick Borne Diseases Task Force, Pike County, the Task Force has established strong partnerships with numerous organizations to raise the level of awareness and education regarding ticks and tick-borne diseases through school nurse tick removal protocols, legislation, and testing.
- Roughneck Aspen Management Project, Bradford County, for their partnership with the Ruffed Grouse Society and local energy development companies to create 107 acres of early successional habitat to attract ruffed grouse, American woodcock, golden-winged warbler, deer, bear, and turkey.
- Executive Director Jane Risse & The Greenhouse Project, Lackawanna County, for partnering with various organizations to create numerous programs for the local community that encourage healthy living via education, wholesome foods, and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
The 25th Annual Thomas P. Shelburne Environmental Leadership Award will be presented to Lynn Conrad, Susquehanna County. Ms. Conrad is being honored for her more than 25 years of dedication to the mission of transforming the D&H Rail Trail from an abandoned rail-bed to one of the premier rail trails in Pennsylvania. Over her impressive career, Ms. Conrad has shown a strong commitment to the environment, an innate ability to work with and create partnerships with other organizations, and inspiring environmental leadership. Her hard work, saving and restoring an important community resource has enhanced the quality of life for people who live and visit Northeastern Pennsylvania. She has worked tirelessly to better connect people to the outdoors and keep past railroad history alive while enhancing appreciation for the protection of special places like the D&H Rail-Trail.
