Now in its sixth year, the PEC Environment Ride will look quite a bit different than in years past.
Personally, I couldn’t be more excited about this year’s one-day ride on Sunday, June 5. It’s extremely varied, more urban, and relates much more to PEC’s work in facilitating the development of The Circuit Trails and the East Coast Greenway.
I made the 40-mile trek yesterday with Ride Committee members Gerry Auman, Kyle Conner, and Pat Calairo, and it was a really fun way to spend a Sunday! With the three-day ride already completely booked, one-day riders will get to experience a wide range of sights and landscapes that dot Southeast Pennsylvania.
Highlights include several miles on the Delaware Canal towpath, the “mountains” of Falls Township, Pennsbury Manor, William Penn’s reconstructed manor, the Bristol Borough mansion row on the Delaware, Glen Foerd, a historic mansion sited on a bluff where the Poquessing enters the Delaware, the beautiful Lardner’s Point Park at the base of the spectacular Tacony-Palmyra Bridge, and neighborhood sights of Tacony, Bridesburg, Port Richmond, and Fishtown.
A penultimate ride across Spring Garden Street (soon to be redesigned as a landscaped media bikeway) to our Schuylkill River destination serves as a great final leg of the trip.
For me, the best part of the one day-ride is that participants will see and learn a lot about PEC’s work to eliminate obstructions to the Delaware Canal Trail and to design and build the East Coast Greenway through Bristol and Bensalem Townships. The ride will also showcase PEC’s long partnership with the Delaware River City Corporation in completing the Delaware River Trail through Northeast Philadelphia.
I’m so proud of the work we’ve accomplished in partnership with so many. In spite of the challenges, we are really making progress. I think you’ll be excited to be “in-the-know” before your friends and colleagues.
But after pedaling 40 miles, who wouldn’t want to relax afterward? I’m sure you’ll savor the delicious lunch planned at the King George Inn on its patio with an amazing view of Burlington Island before a party at the Fairmount Waterworks Interpretive Center to celebrate the conclusion of the event.
