‘Suburban Forest’ Expands in NEPA

MOOSIC — Turning off Route 307, district forester Nicholas Lylo’s Ford Explorer scaled the edge of a plateau until a gap in the forest canopy revealed the urban scene below.

Beyond the screen of oak, chestnut and red maple lay Scranton and the lower Lackawanna Valley. Unbeknownst to many area residents, state agencies have spent the last decade buying large swaths of land that rim their valley.

Around 8,000 acres surrounding Montage Mountain were included in an early 2015 purchase by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The newly acquired land is part of the fastest-growing state forest district in Pennsylvania…
