State Must Ensure Safe End for Coal

Construction of several gas-fueled power plants in Northeast Pennsylvania demonstrates the extent to which market conditions have hastened the demise of the coal industry. Gas produced more electricity than coal for the first time in 2015, a trend that is certain to continue as utilities shutter some coal-fueled plants, construct new gas plants and convert other coal plants to gas.

This region has abundant experience of what happens, economically and environmentally, when the coal industry contracts. The federal and national governments must ensure that the industry’s accelerating decline does not worsen existing coal-related environmental problems or create new ones…
