Work on the next leg of the Wynn and Clara Tredway Trail could begin by the end of April.
Allegheny Township officials plan to meet soon with PennDOT District 12 officials in Uniontown for a pre-construction meeting.
The goal is to have the project done by late August.
The 10-foot-wide trail extension will be from the River Forest marina to an area under the Freeport Bridge.
The project is being funded using a $327,000 grant from the state’s Transportation Alternatives Program, which is managed by PennDOT.
A. Folino Construction of Plum was awarded the construction contract this year.
Preparation work is being performed now, before the project begins in earnest. Sediment retention and new piping are being installed by the Allegheny Township public works department.
Supervisors thanked resident Jack Fleischner for use of his bulldozer in getting the drainage work started.
Once this phase of the trail is completed, officials will begin work for another extension, this time from the Freeport Bridge to Kiski Junction, near where the Allegheny and Kiski rivers meet.
It will all be part of the Erie-Pittsburgh Trail.
The township has received endorsement letters from the Allegheny Valley Land Trust, the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and Friends of the River to use as it seeks grant funding for the next phase.
The trail is on a railroad bed used by the former Pittsburgh-to-Buffalo line, which dates to 1855, and the former Allegheny Valley Railroad line.
