If you want to know what Andrew Place is up to at any given hour, take a look at his footwear.

The newest member of the state Public Utility Commission has spent years moving among different roles: Greene County sheep farmer, executive at gas producer EQT Corp., American Red Cross volunteer, state environmental regulator, Carnegie Mellon University researcher.

“On any given day … you might ask, ‘Are you wearing work shoes or boots or running shoes?’ Maybe I’m a natural chameleon,” Place said last week on his first day in the PUC office in Downtown Pittsburgh.

The Senate confirmed Place, 54, to join the five-member commission that regulates an array of energy, utility, transportation and consumer affairs…
