Luzerne County tourism head Ted Wampole recently told county council he is immersed in a mission to rid the county of litter.

A branding consultant sparked the quest by pointing out issues with litter in some spots during a February visit here, said Wampole, executive director of the county Convention and Tourism Bureau.

“We are going to try to address it and really attack it because curb appeal — from our perspective as a visitors bureau — means everything,” Wampole said.

Wampole asked council to support and encourage municipal and school representatives throughout the county to act on the personal invitations they’ve received to attend an Oct. 22 anti-littering summit.

The meeting will explain anti-littering enforcement and programs available through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Pennsylvania Environmental Council and the county’s new involvement with the regional “Pick Up the Poconos” campaign led by the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau..
