Crawford County commissioners have given their support to further development of the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail in eastern Crawford County at no cost to the county.

At their video conferenced meeting Wednesday, commissioners unanimously approved a $1.5 million grant application to the Appalachian Regional Commission.

The submission is on behalf of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council. It will provide $3 million in matching funds, said Zach Norwood, the county’s planning director.

The grant, if obtained, will be used to develop uncompleted sections of the trail with about 40 percent of the money used to develop sections in eastern Crawford County.

Other trail work would be in Venango County and associated trail links east of the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail.

A small section of the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail in Crawford County has been developed, but it ends about 3 miles south of Spartansburg in the northeastern corner of the county.
