Advocates Push for Action on Longwall Mining

HARRISBURG — Environmental and citizens groups called for the Department of Environmental Protection on Tuesday to re-evaluate its longwall mining regulations and more fully enforce them to prevent the severest impacts to water resources and buildings that are caused by the coal extraction method.

The groups gave testimony to the agency’s Citizens Advisory Council in response to a recent report on the surface impacts caused by bituminous mining in Pennsylvania between 2008 and 2013, saying the “you break it, you fix it” principle at the heart of the state’s subsidence law is not working…
