Northeast Pennsylvania Environmental Partners Announce
Awards Dinner & Award Recipients
Luzerne – The Northeast Environmental Partners, which is comprised of Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Pennsylvania Environmental Council, PPL Corporation, Procter & Gamble Paper Products Company, and Wilkes University are pleased to announce the 30th Annual Evening for Northeast Pennsylvania’s Environment will be held virtually this year on Thursday, November 19, 2020.
RECIPIENTS OF THE 30th ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL PARTNERSHIP AWARDS:
- Sharon Yanik Craig, Lackawanna County, for being an outstanding role model for environmental stewardship and partnerships and serving as an instrumental environmental educator in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Sharon leads by example, setting clear expectations and standards for her peers and students. She has dedicated her life to teaching and developing programs that foster an early love for nature and the natural world.
- Grand Central Landfill, Northampton County, for their partnering efforts which focus on environmental conservation and stewardship. Grand Central Landfill is home to 200 acres of grassland habitat, walking trails and an environmental education center that all provide the community with programs that educate on conservation, renewable energy, recycling, wildlife management and more.
- The Lands at Hillside Farms, Luzerne County, is a 412-acre non-profit educational agricultural farm that operates as a “community owned” teaching farm. The Lands partners with numerous community organizations to provide education on living a sustainable lifestyle including the value of locally grown food, importance of soil and water quality and other nature-based programs.
- The Minsi Lake Cooperative Habitat Improvement Project, Northampton County, is a collaborative effort of the PA Fish & Boat Commission, Northampton County Parks and Friends of Minsi Lake. The habitat improvement project transformed a relatively habitat-barren lake basin into one that boasts wood and rock rubble habitat for fish, increasing the recreational enjoyment for many thousands of visitors to the lake.
- North Branch Trout Derby Association, Wyoming County, for their efforts to provide outdoor activities for youth to create future stewards of the environment. The Association partners with many other groups to further their goal of introducing families to the outdoors for the wonderful hunting and fishing opportunities in the region.
The 26th Annual Thomas P. Shelburne Environmental Leadership Award will be presented to Nancy Ross, Susquehanna County. Ms. Ross is being honored for her more than 40 years of dedication to the protection and improvement of Pennsylvania’s environment. Her contributions to what is now one of the premiere trail systems in NEPA, the D&H Rail Trail, is an important part of her legacy including obtaining the Rail Trail Council of NEPAs headquarters, an historic building in Uniondale, PA. Ms. Ross is a strong conservation advocate and a voice for environmental justice for rural communities across the northern tier of NEPA. She remains a tireless volunteer and champion of causes close to her heart.
