Helena Kotala comes from an eclectic background of experiences in outdoor recreation, mapping, storytelling and environmental stewardship. She will be serving PEC as Mapping Coordinator.
Kotala graduated from Penn State University in 2013 with a B.S. in Geography and Geographic Information Systems. During her time at Penn State, she worked as a field assistant for the Vegetation Dynamics Lab and did a GIS internship with the Riparia wetlands center.
After college, Kotala pursued a passion for writing and outdoor recreation. Prior to coming aboard with PEC, she worked as web editor for Dirt Rag and Bicycle Times magazines, where her primary task was to create and curate cycling-related written content. She has also spent the past few years doing freelance cartography for outdoor recreation events such as Dirt Rag’s Dirt Fest and the Juniata River Sojourn, as well as doing seasonal bike and paddle sports guiding for Rothrock Outfitters.
Kotala currently serves as secretary of the Raystown Mountain Bicycling Association and is an advocate for human-powered outdoor adventure in central Pennsylvania and beyond.
