The Pennsylvania Environmental Council in partnership with the Lands at Hillside Farms will be conducting a streamside tree seedling planting at the Lands at Hillside Farm in Trucksville on Thursday, April 9, 2009 from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
The tree seedling planting is an implementation project of the Wyoming Valley Rivers Conservation Plan that was prepared by PEC in 2008. The planting has been made possible by funding provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The planting project is being conducted along the banks of the Huntsville Creek as it flows through the Lands at Hillside Farms. The purpose of the tree seedling planting is to stabilize the stream bank reducing erosion, improve water quality and improve wildlife habitat.
The volunteers will receive an educational presentation from Vinnie Cotrone, Penn State Extension, regarding the importance of planting native species of trees and their positive impact on stream bank stabilization and reduction of stream bank erosion, as well as, the water quality improvements made by the planting. The volunteers will also learn how to properly plant the tree seedlings and how the plantings will be maintained.
This planting project is a continuation of previous tree plantings conducted at the Lands at Hillside Farms in the fall of 2007 and fall and spring 2008 where over 150 trees and seedlings were planted.
