Rosebud Mining Co., which owns coal-producing sites in both Cambria and Somerset counties, became a 2017 Western Pennsylvania Environmental Award winner for a three-year reclamation project.

The project, which began in August, has the Kittanning-based coal company remediating and reclaiming a 62-acre abandoned mine site in Ehrenfeld, Cambria County. Ehrenfeld is near Johnstown. The company hired nearly four dozen laid-off miners for the project, according to the Pennsylvania Environmental Council.

It is the first time in more than a decade that a coal company received a council award. Awards were presented Wednesday night in Pittsburgh.

“It is a job that has done a lot of good,” said Davitt Woodwell, CEO and president of the council.
